activity based working best practices

With the widespread use of telecommuting and remote working, you probably need fewer fixed workstations and more spaces dedicated to collaboration. It's time to change the rules of the office and getting adapt of employee lifestyle and rethink your workspaces !

Open space and activity based, the best practices

Rule N°1 : make real activity based working and not an ersatz !

How to identify the required workspaces ?
The variety of work spaces is a key element of a successful activity based organization:

  • informal collaboration space
  • concentration space
  • phone booth for making calls
there is a range of spaces! Don't just offer 1 or 2 spaces to your employees!

At Wx, the analysis is based on two fundamentals:

  • Technology, to accurately analyze the user experience with sensors that measure the use of workspaces
  • Ethnography to map the user experience

Include employees in the design of workspaces

If at first glance this may seem risky, giving the keys to your employees, by letting them decide, is the best way to offer them a work environment adapted to their needs and to reduce your expenses related to change management.

Rule #2: Don't ignore the need to isolate yourself

An employee who wishes to isolate himself, does not mean that he does not want to work in a team! Depending on the tasks to be carried out, some require to be alone for reasons of concentration, confidentiality or mood.

There are several solutions to allow employees to isolate themselves when necessary:

  • phone booths
  • quiet rooms
  • cubicles scattered in the open space

Rule #3: Modernize your approach to work

Exit the silent work environments that remind you of university libraries!
Accept that there is noise and life in the open space, a sign of dynamic collaboration, but of course for this to happen, you must first respect rule N°2 by creating isolation spaces dedicated to concentration.

Rule #4: Don't be dogmatic

As with any change, there will always be a handful of people who are resistant to the new organization of workspaces, who will remain attached to their fixed and regular workstations, but most of the time, the transition goes very well when you respect the good practices of activity based working.

A consequence of all this is the necessity to quantify everything. This will allow you to demonstrate to your colleagues, your staff, your teams, your managers and even to the outside world, the performance of your work environment.
